Geert Goiris (° 1971, Bornem; woont in Antwerpen) is een fotograaf die telkens op zoek gaat naar een gevoel van vervreemding tussen mens en omgeving. Met zijn grootformaat analoge camera’s reist hij naar afgelegen landschappen. Van ijzige poolgebieden over dorre woestijnen, tot verlaten modernistische bouwwerken: hij legt ze allemaal vast met een scherpe, bijna sacrale kalmte.

De beelden van Geert Goiris zijn ogenschijnlijk normaal. Tegelijkertijd dragen ze iets onheilspellend in zich, en zweven ze tussen verleden en toekomst, realiteit en mythe. Goiris omschrijft zijn werkwijze als "anticiperend": zijn foto’s zijn geen loutere weergave van wat is, maar aankondigingen van wat kan komen. Hij zoekt naar tekenen van ecologische of sociale veranderingen die zich net buiten ons directe zicht afspelen. Alsof zijn werk een echo bevat van toekomstige breuken.

Hij gebruikt een visuele methode die hij “traumatisch realisme” noemt: de precisie van documentairefotografie mixt hij met poëtische vervreemding. Door lange belichtingstijden te gebruiken, vaak bij schemerlicht of bij extreme lichtomstandigheden, verwijdert Geert Goifris zijn eigen aanwezigheid uit het beeld. De camera registreert in plaats van getuigt; hij vangt een staat van zijn, een samenvatting van tijd en atmosfeer, eerder dan feitelijke gebeurtenissen.

Left Bank is een raadselachtig beeld en toont een detail van de zijdeachtige spinsels die je soms over bomen en struiken ziet in de late lente. De fragiele structuur lijkt architecturaal, als een poort of sluier tussen werelden. In wel meer van Goiris beelden speelt de formele kwaliteit van een membraan een prominente rol; als iets dat tegen een oppervlak duwt, of in dit geval je binnentrekt.

In de publieke ruimte wordt dit frêle beeld een zachte verstoring in de stedelijke omgeving. Misschien wijst het op verschuivingen die zich net buiten ons gezichtsveld voltrekken, veranderingen die nog niet zichtbaar zijn maar wel al voelbaar aanwezig. Het herinnert ons aan onze eigen nietigheid tegenover de stille onverschilligheid van de natuur. In die verstilling lijkt iets vervat te zitten dat zich nog moet ontvouwen. Een stille voorbode van wat nog kan komen.

Geert Goiris (né en 1971 à Bornem ; vit à Anvers) est un photographe qui recherche sans cesse un sentiment d'aliénation entre l'homme et son environnement. Avec ses appareils photo argentiques grand format, il voyage dans des paysages reculés. Des régions polaires glacées aux déserts arides, jusqu'aux bâtiments modernistes abandonnés : il les capture tous avec un calme vif, presque sacré.

Les images de Geert Goiris semblent normales à première vue. À la fois, elles ont quelque chose de sinistre, et flottent entre le passé et le futur, la réalité et le mythe. Goiris décrit sa méthode de travail comme « anticipative » : ses photos ne sont pas une simple représentation de ce qui est, mais des annonces de ce qui pourrait arriver. Il cherche des signes de changements écologiques ou sociaux qui se produisent juste en dehors de notre champ de vision immédiat. Comme si son travail contenait un écho des ruptures futures.

Il utilise une méthode visuelle qu'il appelle « réalisme traumatique » : il mélange la précision de la photographie documentaire avec une aliénation poétique. En utilisant de longues durées d'exposition, souvent à la tombée de la nuit ou dans des conditions d'éclairage extrêmes, Geert Goifris efface sa propre présence de l'image. L'appareil photo enregistre au lieu de témoigner ; il capture un état d'être, un résumé du temps et de l'atmosphère, plutôt que des faits réels.

Left Bank est une image énigmatique qui montre un détail des toiles soyeuses que l'on voit parfois sur les arbres et les buissons à la fin du printemps. La structure fragile semble architecturale, comme une porte ou un voile entre deux mondes. Dans plusieurs sculptures de Goiris, la qualité formelle d'une membrane joue un rôle important, comme quelque chose qui pousse contre une surface ou, qui, dans ce cas, vous attire vers l'intérieur.

Dans l'espace public, cette image fragile devient une douce perturbation dans l'environnement urbain. Elle fait peut-être référence aux changements qui se produisent en dehors de notre champ visuel, des changements qui ne sont pas encore visibles mais qui sont déjà perceptibles. Elle nous rappelle notre propre insignifiance face à l'indifférence silencieuse de la nature. Ce calme semble receler quelque chose qui doit encore se dévoiler. Un signe avant-coureur silencieux de ce qui pourrait arriver.

He travels to remote landscapes with his large format analog cameras. From icy polar regions to arid deserts to abandoned modernist buildings – he captures them all with a sharp, almost sacred calm.

Geert Goiris’ images may appear normal at first glance. At the same time, they carry something ominous within them, hovering between past and future, reality and myth. Goiris describes his way of working as “anticipatory”; his photographs are not mere representations of what is, but announcements of what may come. He searches for signs of ecological or social changes that are taking place just beyond our direct view. As if his work contains an echo of future ruptures.

He uses a visual method he calls “traumatic realism”; he mixes the precision of documentary photography with poetic alienation. By using long exposure times, often in twilight or extreme lighting conditions, Geert Goiris removes his own presence from the image. The camera documents instead of witnessing; it captures a state of being, a summary of time and atmosphere, rather than actual occurrences.

Left Bank is an enigmatic image showing a detail of the silky webs that you sometimes see over trees and bushes in the late spring. The fragile structure seems architectural, like a gateway or veil between worlds. In many of Goiris’ images, the formal quality of a membrane plays a prominent role: as something pushing against a surface, or in this case, drawing you in.

In the public space, this delicate image becomes a gentle disruption in the urban area. Perhaps it points to shifts taking place just outside our field of vision, changes that are not yet visible but already palpable. It reminds us of our own insignificance against nature’s silent indifference. This silence seems to contain something that has yet to unfold. A silent omen of what may come.
