De feestelijke opening vindt plaats op 5 juni en valt samen met de vernissage van '(H)eden', de tweejaarlijkse overzichtstentoonstelling van de ateliers beeldende kunst van het cultuurcentrum. In de maand augustus zal het banket een centrale plaats innemen tijdens Strombeach, een initiatief van Viva1853 dat het Gemeenteplein jaarlijks omtovert tot een strand vol activiteiten georganiseerd door en voor de inwoners van Strombeek.

Het Banket van Utopieën zet Schein’s zoektocht verder naar hoe kunst mensen met elkaar kan verbinden en openbare plekken kan veranderen in plaatsen van herinnering, aandacht en zorg. Haar werk probeert utopie om te zetten in concrete acties, zoals een tuin die je geduldig verzorgt, seizoen na seizoen.

De tafel wordt gemaakt met de hulp van een twintigtal buurtbewoners. Tijdens workshops met de kunstenaar worden de kleurrijke keramieken tegels van het tafelblad uitgewerkt, beschilderd en gebakken. Samen vormen deze individuele bijdragen een collectief verhaal, zoals een gezamenlijke tuin die vorm krijgt door verschillende handen en stemmen, waar utopieën vorm krijgen.

Het Banket van Utopieën verandert het plein in een gedeelde leefruimte: een soort “tuin van relaties”, waar kunst een dagelijkse manier wordt om in gesprek te gaan tussen het cultuurcentrum, de buurt en haar inwoners. Hier is utopie geen vaag of perfect idee, maar iets waar je samen aan werkt. Verschillende meningen en persoonlijke en gezamenlijke ervaringen maken die gedeelde “grond” juist rijker.

De gezamenlijke tafel wordt een soort liggende tuin, zowel symbolisch als echt. Elke tegel dat bewoners beschilderen, werkt als een zaadje. Samen vormen al die bijdragen een gevarieerd landschap, dat laat zien hoe een meer inclusieve, zorgzame en duurzame manier van samenleven mogelijk is. Zo verandert het werk de openbare ruimte in een levende plek die blijft groeien en veranderen. Utopie krijgt vorm door samen dingen te doen, te delen en te creëren.

Son travail tente de traduire l'utopie en actions concrètes, à l'image d'un jardin que l'on entretient patiemment, saison après saison.

La table est réalisée avec l’aide d’une vingtaine de riverains. Lors d’ateliers avec l’artiste, les carreaux de céramique colorés du plateau sont élaborés, peints et cuits. Ensemble, ces contributions individuelles forment un récit collectif, à l’image d’un jardin commun qui prend forme grâce à différentes mains et voix, où les utopies se concrétisent.

Le Banquet des Utopies transforme la place en un espace de vie partagé : une sorte de « jardin des relations », où l'art devient un moyen quotidien d'engager le dialogue entre le centre culturel, le quartier et ses habitants. Ici, l'utopie n'est pas une idée vague ou parfaite, mais quelque chose à laquelle on travaille ensemble. Les opinions divergentes et les expériences personnelles et collectives ne font que enrichir ce « terrain » commun.

La table commune devient une sorte de jardin couché, à la fois symbolique et réel. Chaque dalle peinte par les habitants agit comme une graine. Ensemble, toutes ces contributions forment un paysage varié, qui montre comment un mode de vie en communauté plus inclusif, plus bienveillant et plus durable est possible. Ainsi, l’œuvre transforme l’espace public en un lieu vivant qui ne cesse de croître et d’évoluer. L’utopie prend forme en faisant, en partageant et en créant ensemble.

In August, the banquet will take centre stage during Strombeach, an initiative by Viva1853 that annually transforms the town square into a beach full of activities organised by and for the residents of Strombeek.

The Banquet of Utopias continues Schein’s exploration of art’s capacity to create social bonds and transform public space into a place of memory, attention, and care. Her work consistently seeks to translate utopia into concrete gestures, like a garden patiently cultivated, season after season.

The table is being created with the help of about twenty local residents. During workshops with the artist, the colorful ceramic tiles for the tabletop are designed, painted, and fired. Together, these individual contributions form a collective narrative, much like a shared garden that takes shape through different hands and voices, where utopias come to life.

The work transforms the square into a shared living space: a garden of relationships, where art becomes a daily practice of dialogue between the cultural center, the neighborhood, and its inhabitants. Here, utopia is neither abstract nor idealized: it is approached as a ground to work on together, where differing viewpoints and individual and collective experiences enrich the shared soil.

The communal table becomes a horizontal garden, both symbolic and real, where each tile painted by residents acts as a seed. Together, these contributions form a plural landscape, revealing the potential for a more inclusive, attentive, and sustainable collective life. The work thus transforms public space into a living, evolving environment, where utopia takes shape through the concrete experience of doing together, sharing, and creating collectively.
