This publication brings together and interweaves various projects from Filip Van Dingenen's artistic practice. It highlights the participatory, ecological and critical collective research dimensions inherent in each of his projects. Protocols & Diplomacy attempts to present the underlying protocols, as well as the experiences and stories that have emerged from them, and offers insight into Van Dingenen's own diplomacy as an artist. To this end, he identifies, investigates and observes the critical zones within his practice. This exploration is guided by a series of contradictory concepts that continue to fascinate him. Particular attention is paid to the research practices of Ecole Mondiale, Nfumu-Ngui (The Botanical Archive of the Albino Gorilla Snowflake), Suskewiet Visions and Platform for Algae Diplomacy.

The Publiek Park publication Walking Guide combines essays, archival fragments, and artistic voices to trace both the exhibition route at Plantentuin Meise and the historical path that led from the creation of the Jardin Botanique in the heart of Brussels to its relocation outside the city. Following the logic of a quilt, layering different perspectives, textures, and timelines, the book connects artistic narratives with history and reflections on urban gardens, public space, and botanical imaginaries. Just like the exhibition, the publication offers not merely a portrait of a place, but a reflection on the multiplicity that defines it.

Alongside documentation of the exhibition and contributions from the participating artists, this year’s Walking Guide features writings by Nikolaos Akritidis, Denis Diagre-Vanderpelen, Koen Es, Lana Jones, François Makanga, Noam Youngrak Son, and Jean Watt. The two parks are portrayed in photographs by Michiel De Cleene, with book design by Victor Verhelst and Corbin Mahieu bringing all of these elements together.

This monograph offers the first comprehensive overview of 15 years of work by Belgian-Brazilian artist Elen Braga, who presented a solo exhibition at Cc Strombeek (Like a lion in a cage, 25.10.24 - 26.01.25).

Renowned for her multidisciplinary approach spanning performance, textiles, installation, sculpture, video, and public art, Braga’s practice draws on resilience, self-transcendence, religion, mythology, and identity. Her work often emerges from self-imposed, labor-intensive processes that are as physically challenging as they are conceptually rich, blending her Brazilian heritage with her life in Belgium.

With essays by leading art critics and curators Raphael Fonseca, Laila Melchior, Paulo Miyada, Ilse Roosens and Joanna Zielińska, alongside personal texts by Braga herself, this monograph documents and interprets her oeuvre. The book highlights recurring motifs, underlying themes and the intriguing interplay between art and life.

Cultuurcentrum Strombeek celebrates in 2023 its 50th anniversary. On May 5th 1973, the centre officially opened its doors with a two-day event and “something for everyone.” For this special occasion, CC Strombeek presents an exhibition of new work on paper by more than 50 artists. In spring this year, participants were sent a postcard produced on watercolour paper (A5 format) by post with a request to edit the blank paper and to transform it into a unique work of art. Aside from the format, they were free to choose the theme and material. After this, the works were returned to CC Strombeek by the artists by post. You can admire the result in this exhibition!

The exhibition is simultaneously a benefit event and serves to support future art projects and activities at CC Strombeek. All artworks on display in the exhibition will be offered for sale at €500 each. Please note that this is a “secret sale”: the names of the artists will not be communicated during the exhibition itself. At the time of purchase, the artists’ names will be communicated to you. Each postcard is signed on the back. Let yourself be surprised!

This publication is issued post factum on the occasion of The Postcard Party. This publication includes reproductions of all the artworks and reveals the names of the respective artists (previously anonymous).

This magazine covers the contemporary art exhibitions and activities of the past two years at Cc Strombeek, the cultural centre of Strombeek, located near Brussels, Belgium. The period 2021-2022 marks two dynamic years where in total 8 major exhibitions were realised, with Sam Durant, Nel Maertens, Obi Okigbo, An Roovers, Hadassa Ngamba, Michael Dean, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Noah Latif Lamp, Rachel Rose, and Performing Objects. In addition, the magazine covers numerous other presentations, residencies, and activities that took shape both in and around the vicinity of CC Strombeek, at extraordinary locations such as the Meise Botanic Garden and the Grimbergen Abbey.

Peripheries are ambiguous. A border is the place (like the periphery) where a fixed structure becomes something else. It is a place where lines/things become blurred, often creating opportunities and possibilities. Within the globalised field of arts, peripheral geographic regions, such as Strombeek, constitute valuable environments for experimentation, development, and ideas situated at the margins of the dominant discourse. With its program, CC Strombeek works towards an understanding of art as multi-voiced and changeable, emphasising non-linearity and fluidity.

Designed by Atelier Brenda, the magazine deliberately avoids the format of an exhibition catalogue with academic texts and installation shots. Rather, it seeks to provide insight into the dynamics of the organisation, projects, and artists in an open-ended manner, and features interviews, portraits and reflections from the last two years, as well as snapshots from behind the scenes. The magazine is published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of CC Strombeek.

In 2021, Cc Strombeek presented a new exhibition project by American Berlin-based artist Sam Durant. The exhibition revolved around the interactive installation Proposal for Non-Aligned Monuments, Free Movement (PNMFM). A work dedicated to the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries or the Non-Aligned Movement that emerged in 1961 spurred by Egypt, Ghana, Yugoslavia, Indonesia and India. The movement united countries that did not feel bound to the then two power blocs during the Cold War.

This publication reviews the exhibition at CC Strombeek with texts by Jörn Schafaff and Bojana Piškur.

Het werk van Jacqueline Mesmaeker is ongrijpbaar, discreet en boeiend. Vertrekkend van analytische intenties en experimentele protocollen gekoppeld aan perceptie en representatie, blijft haar praktijk verankerd in een literair en poëtisch universum, inclusief verwijzingen naar Lewis Carroll, Mallarmé, Melville of Paul Willems. Minimaal, soms zelfs onopgemerkt, is haar zeldzame en precieze werk niettemin aanwezig. Het neemt gewillig de ruimte over, speelt met de feitelijke en symbolische architectuur, onthult de structuren en krachtlijnen, maar ook de fouten, door hun perspectieven te dwarsbomen of ze te corrigeren met delicate aanrakingen.

In 2020 stelden Cc Strombeek, BOZAR en Roger Raveel Museum nieuwe selecties van Mesmaekers fragiele ensembles tentoon: poëtische werken die elke semantische beschrijving ontwijken. Cc Strombeek slaagde er in overleg met de kunstenaar in om het werk Enkel Zicht Naar Zee, Naar West (1978) na 35 jaar te reconstrueren naar haar oorspronkelijke presentatie. Het werk bestaat uit 5 projecties vastgelegd op transparante, natuurlijke zijden doeken. Ze tonen een zwerm vliegende vogels, circulerend en zich vermengend in de ruimte, verschijnend en verdwijnend door de sluiers.

Dit boek vormt een catalogus van Mesmaekers trilogie van solotentoonstellingen in Cc Strombeek (januari-maart 2020), Ah, Quelle aventure! in Bozar (mei-juli 2020) en De pagina en pagina in Roger Raveel Museum (december 2020-maart 2021).
