Voor deze editie legde curator Jan De Vroede zijn oor dus tegen de deur van kunstenaarshuis Needcompany. Daar ging de stem op om - in samenwerking - de line-up te inspireren op recente ontmoetingen met en verwonderingen door kunstenaars die enkel te vatten zijn in tegenspraak.

Het antoniem Hard and Tenderly is de titel van deze editie, maar ook van een track van het album ‘God in Three Persons’ van de iconische band The Residents - een perfecte parallel met Needcompany’s meest recente diptiek ‘Billy’s VIOLENCE’ en ‘Billy’s JOY’.

‘On To Somewhere Near’ van Gert Aertsen is een klank-performance die zich steeds in ontmoeting met andere kunstenaars heruitvindt. Een verzoening tussen de elegantie van het object en haar meedogenloze zoektocht naar de grenzen van akoestiek.

Zelden was een videowerk in essentie zozeer een muziekstuk als in ‘La mano que canta’ van Alex Reynolds en Alma Söderberg. De onverbiddelijke vertaling van elke beweging naar muziek en elke vorm naar partituur, met een zintuiglijke afkeer van hiërarchie.

Low Life met Simon Lenski en Nicolas Rombouts omarmt de verwarring tussen muzikaliteit en performativiteit, deze keer in een improvisatie met special guest Chantal Acda.

Even radicaal als voorzichtig is de poëtische intensiteit van ‘The Telescopic Aulos of Atlas’ van Lukas De Clerck, een volgende stap in zijn verbeelding over de Aulos, een Grieks-Romeinse double-reeded double pipe. Een fundamenteel hedendaags klankonderzoek in een genereus gebaar naar een geschiedenis die het begin van het theater in zich draagt.

‘Billy’s Joy’ is een volgende stap in een antwoord van Needcompany op die geschiedenis. Na 'Billy’s Violence' is dit de nieuwe theatertekst van Victor Afung Lauwers, gebaseerd op zijn persoonlijke lezing van het volledige komische oeuvre van Billy Shakespeare. Ellende en vermaak in een onlosmakelijke wurggreep, op de beat van nieuwe muziek van Maarten Seghers.

Drummer Nicolas Field slaat net zo hard op de logica tot ze verdwijnt. Als meesterimprovisator ontrafelt hij virtuositeit halsstarrig en wringt de grootste output uit de kleinste input.

Het introspectieve videoconcert ‘can’t say no to a bruised peach’ resoneert als een zintuiglijk gesprek. De intuïtieve stemkunstenaar en percussionist Fritz Welch verdwaalt in het decor van zijn verleden en zingt voor de spinnen die het bewonen.

Het geluidswerk ‘The Act of Touch - A Resonance of World’s Ends’ werd door Shatha Afify opgebouwd uit klanken die 22 kunstenaars op 22 plekken in de wereld verzamelden binnen dezelfde 24 uur van 31 maart 2022. Een van de vele stappen in het werk van Afify dat een archief aan voorstellen tot een taal en tot een lied van de wereld uitbouwt. Een gigantisch gebaar dat resulteert in een haast onzichtbaar werk.

Myrthe van der Mark werkt op het snijvlak tussen beeldende kunst en performance. Momenteel loopt haar tentoonstelling ‘Girl lives in the village. Sculptress. If you must know.’ in Studio S, de exporuimte in de kelder van Cc Strombeek. Ze activeert haar werk met een performance samen met Solina Lapsus (Jan Laroy & Dieter Durinck).

Palmbomen II is de Amsterdamse muziekproducer en dj Kai Hugo. Hij heeft een voorliefde voor 60's psychedelische pop, Italodisco, antieke synthesizers en tropische temperaturen. Samen met zanger en multi-instrumentalist Kaito Winse, griot uit Burkina Faso, die eerder al eens te zien was in Wunderkammer met Avalanche Kaito, sluit hij deze Wunderkammer editie af met een stevig feestje.

For this edition, curator Jan De Vroede pressed his ear against the door of the artists’ house Needcompany. It was from here that the idea came to collaborate and base the line-up on recent encounters with and admiration for artists who can only be grasped in contradiction.

The sound work ‘The Act of Touch - A Resonance of World’s Ends’ is constructed by Shatha Afify out of sounds that 22 artists from 22 places in the world collected within the same 24-hours of 31 March 2022. One of the many steps in Afify’s work that constructs an archive of suggestions into a language and into a song of the world. A gigantic gesture that results in an almost invisible work.

Together with singer and multi-instrumentalist Kaito Winse, griot from Burkina Faso, who previously appeared at Wunderkammer with Avalanche Kaito, he rounds off this Wunderkammer with a serious party.
