In september brengt CC Strombeek 3 tentoonstellingen rond tekenkunst.
Waar mogen we jou verwachten in 5 jaar?

In September, CC Strombeek presents 3 exhibitions on drawing. The artists An Roovers, Obi Okigbo and Nel Maertens each shape the medium in their own way. The exhibitions are presented as part of the Brussels Drawing Week (14 -19 September), in which about 40 cultural institutions in and around Brussels put contemporary drawing in the spotlight.
The promising artist Nel Maertens (1996, lives and works in Antwerp and Zele) explores color, composition, material, writing and energy in her young drawing and painting practice. Maertens' surprising works result from an intense process in which the boundaries between the process of creation, conceptualisation and realisation often blur. Maertens graduated in 2019 as a master in fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. In addition to her ongoing projects in applied art (fashion, textiles, prints, printing, design), Maertens has recently focused on an autonomous visual art practice.
An interview between Nel Maertens and Charlotte Crevits
Can you tell us something about the choice of your title for the exhibition, A Green Charade?
A Charade refers to something that is obviously false, but that is not presented as such. So in relation to my work, the word leads the viewer up the garden path, in the sense that it seems that I am looking for an idyllic landscape, nature, freshness, ... Yet the representation of the landscape is primarily a way of conceiving all kinds of other narratives. With the exhibition A Green Charade, I mainly aim to create an illusion, to evoke other meanings.
In 2019, you graduated in Fashion from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Last year, you decided to pursue a different course and focus entirely on the visual arts. What prompted the decision to switch from applied to fine art?
It is a spontaneous path that imposes itself on me, rather than the other way round. I feel more comfortable creating my own work, rather than being involved in an applied artform for a company, for example. Still, by working with friends who are active in the fashion world, I remain at a distance, which is where I feel comfortable. At the fashion academy, I was always looking for a way to draw and paint and constantly searching for a cross-over. For my master's project, for example, I created a collection together with artists Flexboj & L.A, integrating paintings into wearable silhouettes.
At first view, your work appears to be very diverse. Yet the speed with which you draw and put an image on paper is very characteristic. Many of your drawings are like diary entries; they are records of direct visual impressions, as well as of conversations, situations and objects. As such, they acquire a sense of urgency. What is the role of the process of drawing and sketching in your practice?
During my fashion training, I actually always thought through drawing. I think ahead when I draw and at the same time I also reflect through my drawings. I tend to quickly translate the things in my surroundings into a visual image. My images are almost hyper-topical, I immediately translate the activity or event, very often already in the actual moment. This process is always an interaction between observation and personal input, a visual translation through drawing.
A form of humour and nonchalance is often present in your work, especially in your more graphic drawings. The titles, such as Nogal illustratief (Quite Illustrative), Mama en baby (niet zo eng bedoeld) (Mother and Baby (Not in such a narrow sense) or Moeilijk want het gebeurt snel (Difficult because it happens quickly), bear witness to your sense of self-relativism and sharp insight into your own artistic practice. Should we interpret this as a kind of criticism on the contemporary art scene?
I am someone who holds strong opinions as a person, but I don't take a stand very quickly. I like to be nuanced, so I can't say this is a comment on the art world. I tend to rather adopt a more detached attitude, also outside of my visual work. It is my kind of view of things: twisting it to get a grip on "things", also in an emotional sense. It is not my intention to be funny. Even though I am not a literary person, the words or phrases I take from conversations are important to me as a way of lending the work a certain perspective. The titles or added sentences are rather spontaneous, mental sketches that complement the drawings.
The serial aspect is very prominent. In the exhibition at CC Strombeek, it quickly becomes clear that you repeat and slightly modify your subjects by changing the format of the image; altering the colours, materials or shapes. You play with the authorship and autonomy of the final image. This repetition lends your work a narrative character, an almost cinematographic "suspense" ...
I am very impatient, when I have an idea, I put it down on paper immediately. There is little time between the idea and its implementation - it "flows" out of me intuitively. By drawing, I get to know my idea or interpretation, and I recreate the image. I literally put my impatience and continuous search for an ever better version on paper. There is indeed a suggestion of a storyline in my drawings. Even though my work is very personal - I often draw my sister or friends; I always try to elevate the work to a more general human level. So it's very intuitive, I'm actually drawing so I don't have to speak ....
You often work with oil stick, oil pastel and soft pastel on paper or cardboard: materials that are characterised by their manageability, directness and typically quick markings that favour the "gesture". This "hands-on" technique contrasts with traditional painting in oils on canvas. Is this a conscious choice?
What interests me is the white paper with colour on it. With pastels you don't have to build up the colours, they are very pure. I don't like to mix - in a fauvistic manner, I simply use the colours straight from the box. It is my preferred method, because I also work a lot "on the go". You can actually work anywhere with this material; I always have my drawing materials with me. Oil paint, on the other hand, is more deliberate, requires build-up and is also more expensive.
The three "classical" genres in art history, the portrait, the landscape and the still life, are constantly recurring. We already talked about your great inspirations in painting such as Van Gogh, Bacon, Rubens, etc. How does your work relate to this long tradition of great masters?
The drawings Kletsen ('Chattering') and Venus en Adonis, for example, are directly inspired by works of Rubens. Personally, I connect with the ''Rubens woman'', an image of women that I do identify with. What I love about Rubens is the ferocity, movement and power with which he portrays animals and people. I literally enjoy copying this energy, they are copies to which I add something of myself. I am also looking at Edvard Munch at the moment, I find the humanity, morality and universal emotion in his work very interesting, apart from the atmosphere, energy and line work which is simply incredible.
To create your landscapes you often go into nature, you paint "en-plein-air".The way you capture your own perception of light, colours and shapes reminds of the impressionists, fauvists and expressionists. What is it exactly that attracts you to the landscape?
I grew up in the countryside, and even as a child we always went on outdoor trips. The landscape invites many interpretations, in contrast to a still life that is more clearly delineated. When you are in the landscape, you find your image, that which you are going to "frame".
The presentation at CC Strombeek is your first exhibition as a visual artist. How do you see yourself evolving as an artist? What can we expect from you in 5 years?
Obviously, I want to continue to evolve in my practice. I can also see myself working with people as a visual artist, in a more project-based way. I will be doing something in an opera soon, for example. I see myself as an omnivalent artist, situated in the centre of the field.
