De tentoonstelling maakt deel uit van de reeks Encounters, projectmatige voorstellingen van jonge kunstenaars die in België wonen. Deze presentatie werd gemaakt in samenwerking met Judith Geerts en het kleuteratelier (3-6 jaar) van Cc Strombeek onder leiding van docenten Gerda Debuck en Han Decorte.

Voor zijn tentoonstelling in de kabinetruimte van Cc Strombeek presenteert Emile Rubino drie nieuwe foto's naast sculpturen (banken) van Judith Geerts, en muurtekeningen gemaakt in samenwerking met het kinderatelier van Cc Strombeek. Rekening houdend met de context van het cultureel centrum en de architectuur van de zeshoekige tentoonstellingsruimte, die tegelijk aan een kapel en een paviljoen doet denken, is Bon public een tentoonstelling voor kinderen en volwassenen, personeel en bezoekers.

De drie foto's die op kinderhoogte hangen, tonen verschillende scènes uit het hedendaagse leven met betrekking tot zorgarbeid, arbeid en creativiteit. Twee vrijwilligers zijn te zien die eten en drinken serveren bij een plaatselijke voedselverstrekking. Bezorgers die bij de ingang van het atelier van de kunstenaar staan, poseren op een manier die toevallig lijkt op een bekende foto van jonge boeren, genomen door de Duitse fotograaf August Sander in 1926. Een speciaal voor de tentoonstelling gemaakte tondo toont de kleuters van Cc Strombeek die stippen tekenen tijdens een workshop van Gerda Debuck en Han Decorte gebaseerd op het werk van Yayoi Kusama. Deze tekeningen worden vergezeld door muurtekeningen van vissen die refereren aan een behangpapier dat Andy Warhol maakte voor zijn tentoonstelling 'Paintings for Children' in 1983. Deze tekeningen, gemaakt door de kleuters van Cc Strombeek, waren voor hen ook een aanleiding om 1 april te vieren met de traditionele aprilvissen.

Emile Rubino

De foto's van Emile Rubino spelen met het declaratieve register van de fotografie. Door te werken met de semantiek van het maken van foto's, het discours en de geschiedenis ervan, vestigt hij onze aandacht op de foto als object en als afbeelding - een dunne en toch ruime container. Door te wijzen op de relatie tussen fotografie, zorg en arbeid, stellen zijn foto's, die vaak een mix van analoge en digitale processen omvatten, het begrip 'het fotografische' in vraag om de sociale vertakkingen ervan aan de orde te stellen.

Emile Rubino (°1992) woont en werkt in Brussel. Hij ontving zijn MFA van ICP-Bard, New York, NY (2017), en zijn BFA van Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, Canada (2015). Solotentoonstellingen zijn onder meer LANDLINE (met Konrad Klapheck), gepresenteerd door Lucas Blalock en Whitney Hubbs, Situations, New York, NY (2021); Friends & Laundry, Island, Brussel, België (2018). Recente groepstentoonstellingen zijn onder meer Saint-Gilles Confidential, LA MAISON DE RENDEZ-VOUS, Brussel, België (2021); Vancouver Carry On, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerpen, België (2018); Ami Omo, Barbara Walters Gallery, Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY (2018). Rubino is co-redacteur van Le Chauffage magazine, een kunstenaarspublicatie gevestigd tussen Brussel en Vancouver. Zijn werk is verschenen in frieze, CFA en Text zur Kunst.

Judith Geerts

Judith Geerts combineert beeldhouwkunst en schrijven met verwijzingen naar architectonische systemen en apparaten die in de openbare ruimte te vinden zijn. Door objecten uit het dagelijks leven na te maken, te veranderen en anders vorm te geven, creëert ze nieuwe draagstructuren. Terwijl ze een formele link behoudt met de oorspronkelijke functies en linguïstische definitie van de objecten, lokt haar werk fysieke ontmoetingen uit tussen continuïteit en verzet.

Judith Geerts (NL, 1989) woont en werkt in Brussel. Geerts studeerde af aan de Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (2015), ze studeerde beeldhouwkunst aan Cooper Union, New York (2014), en volgt momenteel het Master programma aan LUCA, Brussel. Solo tentoonstellingen zijn onder andere Serving Time, Van Gogh Huis, Zundert, Nederland (2021); The Underground Station, Het Domijn, Weesp, Nederland (2020). Cette exposition fait partie de la série Encounters: des présentations de projets par de jeunes artistes vivant en Belgique. L'exposition a été réalisée en collaboration avec Judith Geerts et l'atelier de maternelle (3-6 ans) du Cc Strombeek, animé par les professeurs Gerda Debuck et Han Decorte.

Pour son exposition à Cc Strombeek, Emile Rubino présente trois nouvelles photographies accompagnées de sculptures (bancs) réalisées par Judith Geerts et de dessins muraux fait en collaboration avec l’atelier pour enfants du Centre Culturel. Prenant en compte le contexte particulier du Cc Strombeek ainsi que l’architecture hexagonale de l’espace d’exposition, qui évoque à la fois une chapelle et un pavillon, Bon public est une exposition pour les enfants et les adultes, le personnel du centre et ses visiteurs.

Les trois photographies accrochées à hauteur d’enfant représentent diverses scènes de la vie contemporaine en lien avec le travail et la créativité. On y voit deux bénévoles en train de servir de la nourriture et des boissons dans un centre d’aide alimentaire local. Des livreurs se tenant près de l’entrée de l’atelier de l’artiste posent d’une manière qui, par coïncidence, ressemble à une image connue de jeunes agriculteurs prise par le photographe allemand August Sander en 1926. Un tondo réalisé spécialement pour l’exposition montre des élèves de l’atelier pour enfants du Centre Culturel en train de dessiner des pois et des cercles lors d’un atelier animé par Gerda Debuck et Han Decorte sur la base d’un livre de Yayoi Kusama. Ces images sont accompagnées de dessins muraux de poissons qui rappellent le papier peint d’Andy Warhol pour son exposition “Paintings for Children” en 1983. Réalisés par les élèves de l’atelier pour enfants, ces dessins sont également l’occasion pour eux de fêter le 1er avril avec les traditionnels “poissons d’avril”.

Emile Rubino

Emile Rubino joue avec le registre déclaratif de la photographie. En travaillant sur l’aspect sémantique des images, il attire notre attention sur la photographie en tant qu’objet et représentation - un contenant à la fois mince et ample. En mettant en évidence la relation de la photographie avec le travail, ses images, qui impliquent souvent un mélange de processus analogiques et numériques, remettent en question la notion du “photographique” afin d’aborder ces implications sociales.

Rubino (né en 1992) vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Il a obtenu son MFA à ICP-Bard, New York, NY (2017), et son BFA à Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, Canada (2015). Parmi ses expositions individuelles, LANDLINE (with Konrad Klapheck), présentée par Lucas Blalock et Whitney Hubbs, Situations, New York, NY (2021); Friends & Laundry, Island, Bruxelles, Belgique (2018). Judith Geerts

Judith Geerts combine sculpture et écriture tout en faisant références à divers systèmes architecturaux présents dans l’espace public. En reproduisant, en modifiant et en détournant le design d’objets de la vie quotidienne, elle produit de nouvelles structures. Tout en maintenant un lien formel avec les fonctions originales des objets et leur définition linguistique, son travail suscite des rencontres physiques entre continuité et résistance.

Judith Geerts (NL, 1989) vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Geerts est diplômée de la Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (2015), elle a étudié la sculpture à Cooper Union, New York (2014), et suit actuellement le programme de Master à LUCA, Bruxelles. This exhibition is part of the Encounters series: project-based presentations by young artists living in Belgium. The exhibition is made in collaboration with Judith Geerts and Kindergarten atelier of Cc Strombeek taught by Gerda Debuck and Han Decorte.

For his exhibition in the cabinet space at Cc Strombeek, Emile Rubino is presenting three new pictures alongside sculptures (benches) by Judith Geerts, and wall drawings made in collaboration with Cc Strombeek’s Kindergarten Atelier. Taking into account the context of the cultural center and the architecture of the hexagonal exhibition space, which at once evokes a chapel and a pavilion, Bon public is an exhibition for children and adults, staff and visitors.

The three pictures hanging at kid height depict various scenes of contemporary life pertaining to care work, labor and creativity. Two volunteers are seen serving food and beverages at a local food outreach. Delivery workers standing by the entrance of the artist’s studio pose in a way that coincidentally resemble a well known photograph of young farmers taken by German photographer August Sander in 1926. A tondo made specifically for the exhibition shows Cc Strombeek kindergarten students drawing dots during a workshop taught by Gerda Debuck and Han Decorte based on the work of Yayoi Kusama. These pictures are accompanied by wall drawings of fish alluding to a wallpaper made by Andy Warhol for his 1983 exhibition ‘Paintings for Children’. Made by the kindergarten students at Cc Strombeek, these drawings were also an occasion for them to celebrate April Fools’ Day with the traditional ‘poissons d’avril'.

Emile Rubino

Emile Rubino’s pictures play with photography’s declarative register. Working through the semantics of picture-making, its discourses and histories, he directs our attention towards the photograph as both an object and a depiction — a thin yet capacious container. By drawing out photography’s relationship to care and labor, his pictures, which often involve a mix of analogue and digital processes, question the notion of 'the photographic’ in order to address its social ramifications.

Judith Geerts

Judith Geerts combines sculpture and writing with references to architectural systems and devices found in public spaces. By replicating, altering, and diverting the design of objects from everyday life, she produces new support structures. While maintaining a formal link to the objects’ original functions and linguistic definition, her work prompts physical encounters between continuity and resistance.
