Op uitnodiging van Cultuurcentrum Strombeek presenteert de Zwitsers-Braziliaanse kunstenaar en performer PRICE de muzikale performance “I Try My Tongue (sequences)” (2023), deze keer in samenwerking met gambist Renato Grieco. De Grimbergse Hardy vliegtuigloodsen (gebouwd in 1947 naar ontwerp van Alfred Hardy) vormen het achterplan voor zijn kenmerkende gebruik van stem, muziek en architectuur.

Een brede waaier aan vocale tonen genereert een onheldere relatie tot linguïstische betekenisproductie. Met allusie op jeugdige herinneringen aan het zingen van liedteksten in fonetisch Engels neemt PRICE de hedendaagse globaal dominante lingua franca op de korrel. Met speciale aandacht voor geluid eerder dan voor betekenis onderzoekt het werk de performatieve kracht van taal, suggererend dat we de wereld allemaal eerst affectief ervaren. Buiten onze wil gebombardeerd met vocabulaire, syntaxis en fonemen zijn we besmet van begin af aan.

PRICE en Grieco meten In “I Try My Tongue (sequences)” de lichamelijke infiltratie van het Engels met een liefde voor theatraliteit, die een ontmoeting tussen performer en publiek voortbrengt en vervreemding als herkenning opvoert.

PRICE

Het werk van PRICE (°1986, Brazilië) wordt gekarakteriseerd door uitgebreide soundscapes, kostuums en podiumontwerp, vaak ontwikkeld in samenwerkingsverband. Zijn producties spelen met de verwachtingen van het publiek over de blootgestelde, schijnbaar authentieke zelf van de performer, die haar beroert. Ze zijn doordrenkt met modellen uit popcultuur, mechanische geluiden, ritmes en eigen zang. De stem vormt een centraal element in zijn werk. Voor PRICE is zij een akoestische vorm van emotionele communicatie buiten het imperatief van taal om betekenis te genereren.
Het drama onder de noemer PRICE neemt plaats in een opeenstapeling van verschillende ruimtes met eigen economieën, mechanismen van historiciteit en uitsluiting, normen en potentieel: het podium, de club, de digitale wereld, de catwalk.

PRICE performde en stelde recent tentoon bij Kunsthaus Biel/Bienne (2024), MUDAM, Luxembourg (2023), CAPC Bordeaux France (2023), Traum Bar, Berlijn (2023), Casa do Povo, São Paulo (2023) en OCT0, Marseille (2022).

Renato Grieco

Renato Grieco (°1991, Italië, woont en werkt in Napels) is een componist, field recordist en onderzoeker. Hij doceerde geschiedenis van elektro-akoestische technologie aan het Conservatorium Nicola Sala in Benevento en doctoreert momenteel aan het Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Grieco schreef verschillende composities, bracht albums uit onder de naam kNN (Alta Moda Animale, 2019; Granchio Pinocchio, 2019) en speelde voor artiesten zoals Ellen Arkbro, Nour Mobarak en Philip Corner.

Over de locatie

Een architecturaal hoogstandje, dat zijn de twee ronde vliegtuigloodsen van Alfred Hardy op het recreatief vliegveld. De betonnen hangars zijn in 1947 gebouwd volgens de door Hardy gepatenteerde ‘paddenstoelconstructie’. Kom tijdens een gegidst bezoek (NL) meer over deze architectuur en haar geschiedenis te weten, bv. over hoe het dak ooit bedoeld was als waterreservoir én zwembad.

Presentatie over de Hardy Hangars door Iwan Strauven

Naar aanleiding van de performance in de gerestaureerde vliegtuigloodsen, presenteert Cc Strombeek in dialoog met onderzoeker en curator Iwan Strauven beeldmateriaal over het werk van Alfred Hardy. Strauven duikt hiervoor opnieuw in het archief van Hardy. In 2002 finaliseerde Strauven een onderzoek naar de nog onbekende architect binnen de vakgroep Architectuur en Stedenbouw aan de Universiteit Gent. Via gesprekken met de familie slaagde Strauven erin Hardy's persoonlijke archief in te kijken. Sommige beelden werden opgenomen in de publicatie "Alfred Hardy. 1900-1965" (2002).

In het karrenhuis van de Oyenbrugmolen, gelegen tegenover de loodsen, zal een nieuwe selectie uit het verzamelde materiaal tentoongesteld worden. Op die manier krijgt de bezoeker een inkijk in het technisch vernuft, de utopische ideeën en de figuur achter de markante, elegante cirkelvormige vliegtuighangars te Grimbergen. De foto van een verdwenen proefmodel voor de vliegtuighangars te Grimbergen uit 1947 en de kopie ervan in Deurne vormen het vertrekpunt voor Strauvens selectie, waarin ook gekeken wordt naar zijn droom van nog grotere hangars.

Iwan Strauven

Iwan Strauven is professor architectuurtheorie en -ontwerp aan de architectuurfaculteit La Cambre Horta van de Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) en is sinds 2006 curator architectuur aan het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel (Bozar). Zijn onderzoek richt zich op 20e-eeuwse moderne en hedendaagse architectuur en op de bemiddeling van architectuur door middel van tentoonstellingen. Hij was zelf onder meer curator van de tentoonstellingen Robbrecht en Daem, Pacing through Architecture (BOZAR, Whitechapel Gallery, 2009), Jules Wabbes. Furniture Designer (Bozar, 2012) en Jacques Moeschal. Architecture Sculptures (Bozar, 2021). Zijn recente publicaties zijn Victor Horta. The Grammar of Art Nouveau (Brussel: Mercatorfonds, 2023), Exploring Nu architectuuratelier (Keulen: Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, 2023) en Victor Bourgeois (1897-1962). À l’invitation du Cultuurcentrum Strombeek, l’artiste et interprète helvético-brésilien PRICE présente la performance musicale « I Try My Tongue (sequences) » (2023), cette fois en collaboration avec le gambiste Renato Grieco. Les hangars de l’aérodrome de Grimbergen, construits en 1947 d’après les plans d’Alfred Hardy, servent de décor à son utilisation caractéristique de la voix, de la musique et de l’architecture.

Une large gamme de tonalités vocales instaure une relation obscure avec la production de sens linguistique. En faisant allusion à des souvenirs de jeunesse où il chantait des paroles de chansons en anglais phonétique, PRICE s’attaque à la lingua franca contemporaine qui domine le monde. L’œuvre met davantage l’accent sur le son que sur le sens pour analyser le pouvoir performatif du langage, en suggérant que nous percevons le monde d’abord par l’affect. Bombardés de vocabulaire, de syntaxe et de phonèmes sans que nous le voulions, nous sommes contaminés d’emblée.

Dans « I Try My Tongue (sequences) », PRICE et Grieco mesurent l’infiltration physique de l’anglais avec un amour de la théâtralité, qui provoque une rencontre entre l’interprète et le public et évoque tant l’aliénation que la reconnaissance.

Le travail de PRICE (°1986, Brésil) se caractérise par des paysages sonores, une scénographie et des costumes détaillés, qui sont souvent le fruit d’une collaboration. Ses productions jouent avec les attentes du public concernant le « moi » exposé et en apparence authentique de l’artiste, qui l’émeut. Elles sont imprégnées de modèles issus de la culture pop, de sons mécaniques, de rythmes et de la voix de l’artiste. Voix qui constitue un élément central de son œuvre. Pour PRICE, il s’agit d’une forme acoustique de communication émotionnelle qui transcende l’impératif du langage pour générer du sens.

Le théâtre que propose PRICE prend place dans une accumulation d’espaces différents, chacun doté d’économies, de mécanismes d’historicité et d’exclusion, de normes et de potentiel qui lui sont propres : la scène, le club, le monde numérique, les défilés.

Renato Grieco (°1991 en Italie, vit et travaille à Naples) est compositeur, preneur de son en extérieur et chercheur. Il a enseigné l’histoire de la technologie électroacoustique au Conservatorio Nicola Sala de Bénévent et enseigne actuellement à l’école supérieure de musique Mozarteum de Salzbourg. Grieco a écrit plusieurs compositions, sorti des albums sous le nom de kNN (Alta Moda Animale, 2019 ; Granchio Pinocchio, 2019) et joué pour des artistes tels qu’Ellen Arkbro, Nour Mobarak et Philip Corner.

Un tour de force architectural, ce sont les deux hangars à avions ronds d'Alfred Hardy à l'aéroport récréatif. Présentation des hangars Hardy par Iwan Strauven

Après la performance dans les hangars de Hardy, CC Strombeek présente du matériel visuel sur l'œuvre d'Alfred Hardy en dialogue avec l’auteur et curateur Iwan Strauven.

Pour ce faire, Strauven se plonge à nouveau dans les archives de Hardy. En 2002, Strauven a effectué des recherches sur cet architecte encore inconnu au sein du Département d'Architecture et d'Urbanisme de l'Université de Gand. Grâce à des conversations avec la famille, Strauven a pu consulter les archives personnelles de Hardy. Certaines images ont été incluses dans la publication « Alfred Hardy. 1900-1965 » (2002).

Dans la charretterie d’Oyenbrugmolen, située en face des hangars, une nouvelle sélection du matériel collecté sera exposée. Les visiteurs pourront ainsi se faire une idée de l'ingéniosité technique, des idées utopiques et les personnages qui se cachent derrière les hangars d'aviation circulaires, élégants et remarquables de Grimbergen. La photographie d'un modèle d'essai perdu des hangars de Grimbergen datant de 1947 et sa copie à Deurne constituent le point de départ de la sélection de Strauven, qui se penche également sur son rêve de hangars encore plus grands.

At the invitation of Cultuurcentrum Strombeek, the Suisse-Brazilian artist and performer PRICE presents the musical performance “I Try My Tongue (sequences)” (2023), this time in collaboration with viola da gamba player Renato Grieco. The Grimbergen “Hardy hangars” (built in 1947 after Alfred Hardy’s design) form the backdrop for the artist’s distinctive use of voice, music and architecture. A wide range of vocal tones generate an opaque relation to linguistic meaning production. Alluding to youthful memories of singing lyrics in phonetically echoed English, PRICE takes today’s globally dominant lingua franca to task. Honing in on sound rather than meaning, the work explores the performative force of language, suggesting that we experience the world affectively first. Bombarded with vocabulary, syntax and phonemes not of our choice, we are contaminated from the start. In “I Try My Tongue (sequences)”, PRICE and Grieco measure the bodily infiltration of English with a love for theatricality, generating an encounter between performer and audience that stages alienation as recognition.

About the architecture

Presentation on the Hardy Hangars by Iwan Strauven

Following the performance in the restored aircraft hangars, CC Strombeek Expo presents visual material about Hardy's work in dialogue with researcher and curator Iwan Strauven. For this, Strauven is once again diving into Hardy's archive. In 2002, Strauven completed research into the still unknown architect within the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Ghent University. Through conversations with the family, Strauven managed to look into Hardy's personal archive. Some of the images were included in the publication ‘Alfred Hardy. 1900-1965’ (2002).

In the cart house of the Oyebrugmolen, located opposite the hangars, a new selection from the collected material will be exhibited. This will give visitors an insight into the technical ingenuity, utopian ideas and figure behind the striking, elegant circular aircraft hangars in Grimbergen. The photograph of a lost test model for the aircraft hangars in Grimbergen from 1947 and its copy in Deurne form the starting point for Strauven's selection, which also looks at his dream of even bigger hangars.
