Inside Out | Film
Naar aanleiding van zijn solotentoonstelling in Cc Strombeek selecteerde Sam Durant twee kortfilms van Leandro Katz (Buenos Aires, 1938) voor het Inside Out-filmprogramma i.s.m. Argos.
Leandro Katz is een Amerikaans-Argentijns beeldend kunstenaar, schrijver-dichter en filmmaker. Zijn werk neemt vaak de vorm aan van langdurige projecten gebaseerd op historisch en antropologisch onderzoek. Voorbeelden zijn The Catherwood Project, een fotografische reconstructie van de expedities van John Lloyd Stephens en Frederick Catherwood van de Maya sites in Centraal-Amerika en Mexico; The Day You’ll Love Me, een meditatie over Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara’s arrestatie en executie in Bolivia in 1967; en Vortex, een 22 jaar durend onderzoek over de sociale en literaire geschiedenis van de rubberindustrie in regio van de Putumayorivier, één van de zijrivieren van de Amazone.
Paradox
De koloniale voetafdruk in Centraal- en Zuid-Amerika is één van de centrale thema’s in Katz’ werk en vormt ook de insteek van de documentaire kortfilm Paradox uit 2001. Hierin portretteert Katz de bananenindustrie in de onmiddellijke omgeving van de archeologische site Quirigue in Guatemala. Katz schetst een indringend beeld van de krampachtig bezige loonslaven die het onmiddellijke slachtoffer zijn van een transnationale wereldeconomie. De confrontatie tussen de hoogstaande precolumbiaanse Mayacultuur en de sombere realiteit van vandaag maakt van Paradox een uitdrukkelijk manifest over één van de belangrijkste paradoxen van het Latijns-Amerikaanse continent: de overvloedige natuurlijke hulpbronnen brachten de regio vaker politieke instabiliteit, armoede, uitbuiting en tirannie dan welvaart of stabiliteit.
The Visit
Naast documentaire films maakte Katz sinds het midden van de jaren ’70 ook verschillende experimentele narratieve films. De metafysische, absurdistische thriller The Visit uit 1986 vertelt het verhaal van een achtervolging tussen twee personages, zonder dat de kijker deelgenoot wordt van het plot. Door de afwijkende narratieve gevoeligheid, de nadruk op de dramatiek van het moment en het voelbare plezier in onverklaarbare situaties illustreert The Visit Katz’ levenslange interesse in de semiotiek. De dialectiek tussen kijken en lezen, realiteit en representatie, waarneming en betekenis vormt het uitgangspunt voor inmiddels bijna 50 jaar denken over en in film.
Deze online filmscreening wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Argos, centrum voor audiovisuele kunsten. De film zal ter beschikking worden gesteld via hun website van 23 april (9u) tot 30 april (9u).
Dans le cadre de son exposition personnelle au Cc Strombeek, Sam Durant a sélectionné deux courts métrages de Leandro Katz (Buenos Aires, 1938). La projection est organisée en collaboration avec Argos, centre d'arts audiovisuels, et fait partie de Inside Out, le programme d’activités du public dans le cadre de l’exposition.
Leandro Katz est un artiste américano-argentin visuel, écrivain-poète et cinéaste. Son œuvre prend souvent la forme de projets de longue durée, fondés sur des recherches historiques et anthropologiques. Épinglons notamment The Catherwood Project, une reconstitution photographique des expéditions de John Lloyd Stephens et Frederick Catherwood sur les sites mayas d’Amérique centrale et du Mexique; The Day You'll Love Me, une méditation sur l’arrestation et l’exécution d’Ernesto « Che » Guevara en Bolivie, en 1967; et Vortex, une enquête de 22 ans consacrée à l’histoire sociale et littéraire de l’industrie du caoutchouc dans la région du fleuve Putumayo, l’un des affluents de l’Amazone.
Paradox
L’empreinte coloniale en Amérique centrale et du Sud est l’un des thèmes centraux de l’œuvre de Katz et constitue aussi le point de départ du court métrage documentaire Paradox, réalisé en 2001. Katz y dresse le portrait de l’industrie bananière dans les environs immédiats du site archéologique de Quirigue, au Guatemala. Katz brosse un tableau interpellant d’esclaves salariés désespérés, victimes immédiates d’une économie mondiale transnationale. La confrontation entre la culture maya précolombienne de premier plan et la sombre réalité d’aujourd’hui est un manifeste explicite sur l’un des plus importants paradoxes du continent latino-américain: les abondantes ressources naturelles de la région lui ont plus souvent apporté l’instabilité politique, la pauvreté, l’exploitation et la tyrannie que la prospérité ou la stabilité.
The Visit
Outre les films documentaires, Katz a également réalisé plusieurs films narratifs expérimentaux depuis le milieu des années 1970. Signé en 1986, le thriller métaphysique et absurde The Visit raconte l’histoire d’une course-poursuite entre deux personnages, sans que le spectateur soit invité dans l’intrigue. Par sa sensibilité narrative aberrante, son accent sur le drame de l’instant et son plaisir palpable dans les situations inexplicables, The Visit illustre l’intérêt que Katz a toujours porté à la sémiotique. La dialectique entre regard et lecture, réalité et représentation, perception et signification est le point de départ de près de 50 ans de réflexion sur et dans le cinéma.

Leandro Katz is an American-Argentinian visual artist, writer, poet and filmmaker. His films are often long-term projects based on historical and anthropological research. Examples include The Catherwood Project, a photographic reconstruction of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood’s archaeological expeditions to the ancient Maya sites in Central America and Mexico; The Day You’ll Love Me, a meditation on Ernesto Che Guevara’s capture and execution in Bolivia in 1967; and Vortex, a 22-year-long research project about the social and literary history of the rubber industry in the Amazon region of the Putumayo river.
Paradox
The colonial footprint in Central and Latin America has been the central theme of Katz’s work, like in his short documentary film Paradox (2001). Katz portrays the banana industry in the immediate vicinity of the archaeological site of Quiriguá in Guatemala. He shows a harrowing image of the desperate labourers who are the direct victims of a transnational global economy. Juxtaposing the pre-Columbian Maya culture and the bleak reality of today, Paradox is an explicit manifesto about one of the greatest paradoxes of the Latin American continent: more often than not, the region’s abundant natural resources have brought political instability, poverty, exploitation and tyranny instead of prosperity or stability.
The Visit
In addition to his documentary work, Leandro has enjoyed worldwide acclaim since the 1970s with his experimental narrative films. The 1986 metaphysical, absurdist thriller The Visit tells the story of two men pursuing each other, without the viewer becoming part of the plot. Through its divergent narrative sensibility, its emphasis on the drama of the moment and its palpable pleasure in inexplicable situations, The Visit illustrates Katz’s lifelong interest in semiotics. The dialectics between looking and reading, reality and representation, perception and meaning, is the starting point for almost 50 years of thinking in and about film.
