Gelanceerd op initiatief van de beurs, Art on Paper, in dialoog met de belangrijkste kunstinstellingen, -centra en -scholen in Brussel, laat de Brussels Drawing Week een zeer breed Brussels publiek – maar ook nationaal en internationaal – toe om de tekenkunst, haar geschiedenis, haar actoren en haar praktijken te (her)ontdekken tijdens een intense week. Van 2 tot en met 8 oktober worden in het kader van de Brussels Drawing Week verschillende evenementen georganiseerd, zoals rondleidingen, workshops, conferenties, ontmoetingen, tentoonstellingen en performances. Voor deze gelegenheid brengt CC Strombeek een off-site presentatie van de Belgische kunstenares Gwendolyn Lootens die de bezoekers ook uitnodigt om deel te nemen aan het tekenen en het gebaar ervan te verkennen op een onthullende manier.

Sound of a moment geeft inzicht in het werk van Gwendolyn Lootens, dat voornamelijk bestaat uit tekenen ('moments'), video ('moving moments') en situaties. In haar praktijk verbindt ze de abstractie van het tekenen, de vluchtigheid van videowerk en de sociale dimensie van situaties waarin mensen betrokken zijn. Het uitgangspunt van deze tentoonstelling zijn geluidsopnamen die de kunstenaar maakt terwijl ze tekent en die ritme, energie, snelheid, aandacht, kracht of zachtheid van de tekening vastleggen. Op die manier onderzoekt Lootens elementen van haar tekenlexicon. Tijdens de Brussels Drawing Week nodigt ze bezoekers uit om een tekening te maken op basis van een geluidsopname en deze 'snippet' op te slaan in een voortdurend groeiend en veranderend archief, waar het lexicon tot leven komt. De expo presenteert ook een selectie van 'moments': ensembles van tekeningen die gerelateerd zijn aan de geluidsfragmenten. De 'moving moments' leggen onderliggende handelingen van het tekenen vast in een gebaar.

Gwendolyn Lootens (°1981, woont en werkt in Oostende) studeerde beeldende en audiovisuele kunsten aan Sint Lukas Gent en Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, en film aan RITS Brussel. Ze was onder andere artist in residence in WIELS. Naast kunstenaar en filmmaker is ze ook medeoprichter van Cinemaximiliaan, een filmplatform met en voor nieuwkomers in Brussel. Samen met haar partner, onderzoeker en schrijver Gawan Fagard, ontwikkelt ze ook artistieke projecten die beeldende kunst, schrijven, film, veerkracht en de zee samenbrengen onder de noemer 'resealience'.

Lancée à l’initiative du salon Art on Paper, en dialogue avec les institutions, centres et écoles d’art de référence à Bruxelles, la Brussels Drawing Week permet à un très large public bruxellois (mais aussi national et international) de (re)découvrir le dessin, son histoire, ses acteurs et ses pratiques durant une semaine intense. Du 2 au 8 octobre, la Brussels Drawing Week organisera divers événements tels que des visites guidées, des ateliers, des conférences, des rencontres, des expositions et des performances. À cette occasion, le centre culturel de Strombeek proposera une présentation hors site de l’artiste belge Gwendolyn Lootens, qui invitera les visiteurs à prendre part au dessin et à explorer son geste dans une perspective révélatrice.

Sound of a moment nous offre une immersion dans l’œuvre de Gwendolyn Lootens, qui se compose essentiellement de dessins (« moments »), de vidéos (« moving moments ») et de situations. Dans sa pratique, l’artiste réunit l’abstraction du dessin, le caractère éphémère de la vidéo et la dimension sociale des situations qui impliquent des personnes. Cette exposition se base sur des enregistrements sonores que l’artiste réalise pendant qu’elle dessine, et qui capturent le rythme, l’énergie, la vitesse, l’attention, la force ou la douceur du dessin. Une manière pour Lootens d’explorer des éléments de son lexique de dessin. Dans le cadre de la Brussels Drawing Week, elle invitera les visiteurs à réaliser un dessin sur la base d’un enregistrement sonore et à conserver cet « extrait » dans une archive en perpétuelle expansion et en constante évolution, où le lexique prend vie. L’exposition présente également un florilège de « moments » : des ensembles de dessins liés aux extraits sonores. Les « moving moments » fixent les actes qui sous-tendent le dessin dans un geste.

Gwendolyn Lootens (°1981, vit et travaille à Ostende) a étudié les arts visuels et audiovisuels à Sint-Lukas à Gand et à l’académie Gerrit Rietveld d’Amsterdam, avant un master documentaire au RITCS à Bruxelles. Elle a notamment été artiste en résidence au centre d’art contemporain WIELS. En plus d’être artiste et cinéaste, elle est également cofondatrice de Cinemaximiliaan, une plateforme de cinéma organisée avec et par les nouveaux arrivants à Bruxelles. Aidée par son partenaire, le chercheur et écrivain Gawan Fagard, elle met également sur pied des projets artistiques qui réunissent l’art visuel, l’écriture, le cinéma, la résilience et la mer sous la dénomination « ReSealience ».

Launched at the initiative of the Art on Paper fair, in dialogue with the art institutions, centres and schools of reference in Brussels, the Brussels Drawing Week allows a broad Brussels audience – but also national and international – to (re)discover drawing, its history, its actors and its practices during an intense week of programming. From 2 to 8 October, the Brussels Drawing Week will bring together various events such as guided tours, workshops, conferences, meetings, exhibitions and performances. On this occasion, CC Strombeek brings an off-site presentation by the Belgian artist Gwendolyn Lootens who also invites the visitors to participate in the act of drawing and to explore its act in a revealing way.

Sound of a moment gives an insight into the work of Gwendolyn Lootens, mainly consisting of drawing ('moments'), video ('moving moments') and situations. In her art practice she connects the abstraction of drawing, the volatility of video work, and the social dimension of situations involving people. The starting point of this exhibition are sound recordings made by the artist while drawing, capturing rhythm, energy, speed, attention, force, or softness of the drawing. As such, Lootens investigates elements of her drawing lexicon. During Brussels Drawing Week, she invites visitors to make a drawing based on a sound recording, and store this 'snippet' in a constantly growing and changing archive, where the lexicon comes to life. The exhibition also presents a selection of 'moments': ensembles of drawings related to the sound pieces. The 'moving moments' capture underlying actions of drawing into a gesture.

She was artist in residence at WIELS, amongst others. In addition to being an artist and filmmaker, she is also co-founder of Cinemaximiliaan, a film platform with and for newcomers in Brussels. Together with her partner, researcher, and writer Gawan Fagard, she also develops artistic projects that bring together visual art, writing, film, resilience, and the sea under the umbrella of 'resealience'.
