Naar aanleiding van de zopas geopende tentoonstelling RESILIENCE, organiseert Cc Strombeek een dag gewijd aan het thema veerkracht en het belang ervan in queer gemeenschappen en politiek engagement.
Mary Szydłowska, die onlangs in residentie was, zal een choreografische workshop geven en gedeelde onproductiviteit, sluimerende vermoeidheid en kortstondige manieren van samenkomen onderzoeken. In de namiddag presenteert Dora García een preview van haar nieuwste film (Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024). Juliette Blightman geeft een lezing over haar recente onderzoek naar de grenzen van huiselijke ruimte, creatieve productie en gender. De dag wordt afgesloten met een gesprek over veerkracht, gemodereerd door Sevie Tsampalla, tussen deze kunstenaars en Elen Braga, die momenteel een solotentoonstelling toont in Cc Strombeek.

Between deep exhaustion and deep relaxation. In search for embodied states of resilience
In deze choreografische workshop introduceert Mary Szydłowska hun onderzoek naar een belichaamde staat van gedeelde on-productiviteit, sluimerende vermoeidheid en efemere wijzes van samenkomst. Hoe blijven we samen in verschil? Hoe komen we aan in ruimtes en hoe delen we ze? Lichamelijke oefeningen, technologieën van de blik en praktijken van deep listening helpen de deelnemers om regeneratieve stilte te ontdekken aan de hand van introverte collectieve kracht.
De workshop is voor iedereen toegankelijk, voornamelijk zij die zich als neurodivergent identificeren. Er is geen ervaring vereist.
De workshop maakt deel uit van Mary Szydłowska’s onderzoek Cleaning Oracles, gerealiseerd met de steun van Vlaanderen.

Lezing: Juliette Blightman
De workshop wordt gevolgd door een lezing van Juliette Blightman over A Room After Woolf, haar praktijkgebaseerde onderzoek naar de grenzen van huiselijke ruimte, creatieve productie en gender. Blightman voltooide onlangs haar PhD aan het Royal College of Art in Londen.
Haar onderzoek gaat na hoe hedendaagse kunstpraktijken, in het bijzonder hun belichaamde ervaringen van creatieve productie en fysieke ruimte, nieuw licht kunnen werpen op Virginia Woolfs A Room of One's Own (1929). Het doctoraat brengt werk en methodes van kunstenaars aan de hand van huiselijke ruimtes en kamers in kaart. Blightman gebruikt hierboor verschillende feministische strategieën om dominante culturele verwachtingen en normen qua genderrollen bloot te leggen en hun snijpunten te laten zien, in het bijzonder met betrekking tot werk en huiselijke arbeid.

Vervolgens in het programma een primeur: een vertoning van de nieuwe film (Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024) van Dora García.
“Maak van jouw liefde een wapen.” Deze film herleest de geschriften van de Sovjet-revolutionaire en seksuele activiste Alexandra Kollontai, die gaan over vrouwelijke seksualiteit en emancipatie, het afschaffen van de kernfamilie en de nood om “hart en geest te veranderen”. Deze film traceert een ingewikkeld web van connecties tussen het 20ste-eeuwse Europese marxistische feminisme en het 21ste-eeuwse Latijns-Amerikaanse transfeminisme, tussen persoonlijke en collectieve rouw, tussen de talrijke manieren om het vrouwelijke te begrijpen, en tussen de melancholische blik op ontgoocheling en de furieuze, tedere en veeleisende hoop dat de Revolutie, eindelijk, zijn belofte nakomt.
(Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024) is verwant met Red Love (2023). Klank en beeld van de originele footage van Red Love werden volledig gehermonteerd en er werd veel nieuw archiefmateriaal toegevoegd. Dit gebaar draagt bij tot de urgentie van militante bewegingen en traceert tegelijkertijd met zorg diens historische afstamming.
De film is het resultaat van acht jaar onderzoek in de Moskouse Engels-Marx-Lenin archieven en verschillende persoonlijke, familiale, historische en activistische archieven in Mexico en Latijns-Amerika. Dit is een collectief werk dat door een team van onderzoekers en artiesten van verschillende nationaliteiten werd geleverd. Het werk treedt zo in de voetsporen van militante cinema, toont haar geschiedenis en kijkt tegelijk verder in de toekomst.

We eindigen de dag in de Passage met een gesprek tussen Juliette Blightman, Elen Braga, Dora García, Mary Szydłowska en moderator Sevie Tsampalla.
Vertrekkende van de notie veerkracht gaan ze in dialoog over onderwerpen zoals liefde, vriendschap en feministische perspectieven op intimiteit en collectieve weerstand vanuit de marges. Hun verschillende perspectieven doorkruisen elkaar en geven ons zo inkijk in bredere vragen die hedendaagse kunstpraktijken en artistiek onderzoek onderbouwen.

Sevie Tsampalla (°1977, geboren in Kos, Griekenland; woont en werkt in Brussel) is een curator en onderzoekster. Haar praktijk bevindt zich op de kruispunten van hedendaagse kunst, cureren en activisme in de publieke ruimte. Met een langdurige interesse voor collaboratieve processen is ze betrokken bij kunstenaarscollectieven en projecten die zoeken naar vernieuwde relaties in/met de publieke ruimte vanuit een feministische invalshoek. Haar doctoraatsonderzoek onderzocht hoe grootschalige tentoonstellingen kunnen worden herdacht door noties van ‘commoning’, nl. collectieve praktijken die de stad herdenken, en ecologische verbeelding voorbij het kapitalisme.
Tsampalla was betrokken bij het cureren van Spaces of Possibility, Triënnale Brugge, 2024; Biënnale van Liverpool, 2016; Track, S.M.A.K. Gent, 2012 en groepstentoonstellingen in o.a. Trophy Room (Liverpool), Pianofabriek (Brussel), AirSpace Gallery (Stoke-on-Trent), Castlefield Gallery (Manchester).
À l'occasion de l'exposition RESILIENCE qui vient d'ouvrir ses portes, le Cc Strombeek organise une journée consacrée au thème de la résilience et à son importance dans les communautés queer et l'engagement politique.
Mary Szydłowska, qui était récemment en résidence, apportera un atelier chorégraphique et explorera l'improductivité partagée, la fatigue dormante et les modes éphémères de rassemblement. L'après-midi, Dora García présentera en avant-première son dernier film (Revolution, fulfill your promise) Red Love (2024). Juliette Blightman présentera une conférence sur ses recherches récentes concernant les limites de l'espace domestique, la production créative et le genre. La journée se terminera par un débat sur la résilience entre ces artistes et Elen Braga, qui présente actuellement une exposition solo au Cc Strombeek, animé par Sevie Tsampalla.

Dans ce workshop chorégraphique, Mary Szydłowska présente leurs recherches sur les états incarnés d'improductivité partagée, la fatigue persistante et les façons éphémères de se réunir. Comment restons-nous ensemble dans la différence, comment arrivons-nous dans les espaces et comment les partageons-nous ? En se déplaçant entre les pratiques somatiques, les technologies du regard et les pratiques de deep listening, les participants seront invités à explorer la tranquillité régénératrice à travers la force collective introvertie.
L'invitation est ouverte à tous, en particulier à ceux qui s'identifient comme neurodivergents. Aucune expérience n'est requise.
Le workshop fait partie de la recherche Cleaning Oracles de Mary Szydłowska, soutenue par le gouvernement flamand.

L'atelier sera suivi d'une lecture de Juliette Blightman sur A Room After Woolf, son enquête pratique sur les limites de l'espace domestique, de la production créative et du genre. Mme Blightman a récemment terminé son doctorat au Royal College of Art de Londres.
Ses recherches portent sur la manière dont les pratiques artistiques contemporaines, plus particulièrement leurs expériences incarnées de production créative et d’espace physique, peuvent apporter un nouvel éclairage au roman Une chambre à soi (1929) de Virginia Woolf. La thèse de doctorat de Juliette Blightman répertorie les pratiques et les méthodes des artistes en fonction des pièces et des espaces domestiques. L’artiste emprunte diverses stratégies féministes pour mettre en évidence les attentes et les normes culturelles dominantes en termes de rôles de genre et montrer leurs points d’intersection, en particulier en ce qui concerne le travail et les tâches ménagères.

Le programme prévoit ensuite une première : la projection du nouveau film (Révolution, tiens ta promesse) Red Love (2024) de Dora García.
« Faites de votre amour une arme. » Ce film offre une lecture des écrits de la révolutionnaire soviétique et militante féministe Alexandra Kollontaï, qui traitent de la sexualité et de l’émancipation des femmes, de l’abolition de la famille nucléaire et de la nécessité de « changer les cœurs et les mentalités ». Ce film trace un réseau complexe de connexions entre le féminisme marxiste européen du XXe siècle et le transféminisme latino-américain du XXIe siècle, entre le deuil personnel et collectif, entre les innombrables manières d’appréhender le féminin, et entre le regard mélancolique de la désillusion et l’espoir tenace, tendre et exigeant que la Révolution tienne enfin sa promesse.
(Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024) fait écho à Red Love (2023). Le son et l’image des séquences originales de Red Love ont été entièrement remastérisés et complétés par de nouveaux documents d’archives. Ce geste participe à l’urgence des mouvements militants, tout en retraçant soigneusement leur chronologie.
Ce film est le fruit de huit années de recherche dans les archives d’Engels, Marx et Lénine à Moscou, ainsi que dans diverses archives personnelles, familiales, historiques et activistes au Mexique et en Amérique latine. Cette œuvre collective, réalisée par une équipe de chercheurs et d’artistes de différentes nationalités, s’inscrit dans la droite ligne du cinéma militant. Elle présente l’histoire de ce dernier et jette un regard prospectif sur l’avenir.

Sevie Tsampalla (°1977, née à Kos, Grèce ; vit et travaille à Bruxelles) est commissaire d’expositions et chercheuse. Son travail se situe à la croisée de l’art contemporain, de la curation et de l’activisme dans l’espace public. Adepte de longue date des processus collaboratifs, Sevie Tsampalla s’implique dans des collectifs d’artistes et des projets qui cherchent à établir de nouvelles relations dans/avec l’espace public, dans une perspective féministe. Dans le cadre de sa thèse de doctorat, elle s’est intéressée à la manière de repenser les expositions à grande échelle à travers des notions de « commoning », c’est-à-dire des pratiques collectives qui réinventent la ville, et en faisant primer l’imagination écologique sur le capitalisme.
Sevie Tsampalla a notamment été commissaire de Spaces of Possibility, à la Triennale de Bruges (2024) ; de la Biennale de Liverpool ; de Track, au S.M.A.K. de Gand (2012) ; mais aussi de diverses expositions collectives, notamment à la Trophy Room (Liverpool), à la Pianofabriek (Bruxelles), à l’AirSpace Gallery (Stoke-on-Trent) et à la Castlefield Gallery (Manchester).
On the occasion of the recently opened exhibition RESILIENCE, CC Strombeek is organizing a day dedicated to the theme of resilience and its importance in queer communities and political engagement.
Mary Szydłowska, who was recently in residence, brings a choreographic workshop and explores shared unproductivity, dormant fatigue and ephemeral modes of coming together. In the afternoon, Dora García premieres her latest film “(Revolution, fulfill your promise) Red Love (2024).” Juliette Blightman presents a lecture on her recent research into the boundaries of domestic space, creative production and gender. The day concludes with a debate on resilience between these artists, as well as artist Elen Braga who currently has a solo exhibition at CC Strombeek, moderated by Sevie Tsampalla.

In this choreographic workshop, Mary Szydłowska introduces their research on embodied states of shared unproductivity, lingering fatigue and ephemeral ways of coming together. How do we stay together within difference, how do we arrive to spaces and how do we share them? Moving between somatic practices, technologies of gaze and practices of deep listening, the participants will be invited to explore regenerative quietness through introverted collective strength.
The invitation is open to everyone, especially to those identifying as neurodivergent. No previous experience in embodied practices is required.
The workshop is part of the ongoing research Cleaning Oracles by Mary Szydłowska, supported by The Flemish Government.

Lecture: Juliette Blightman
The workshop will be followed by a lecture by Juliette Blightman on A Room After Woolf, her practice-based investigation into the boundaries of domestic space, creative production, and gender. Blightman recently completed her PhD at the Royal College of Art, London.
Her research explores how a consideration of contemporary artists' practices, in particular their embodied experiences of creative production and physical space, might shed new light on Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own (1929). The PhD maps artists' work and methodologies onto specific domestic spaces/rooms as a means of locating them within the home; it also uses various feminist strategies to straddle and unpick dominant cultural expectations and norms of gender roles, particularly with regards to work and domestic labour.

Next in the programme is a scoop: a screening of the new film (Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024) by Dora García.
Turn your love into a weapon. This film reads Soviet revolutionary and sexual activist Alexandra Kollontai’s writings on female sexuality and emancipation, on the abolition of the family and the need to “change hearts and minds”. This reading traces a complex web of connections between 20th century European Marxist feminism and 21st century Latin American transfeminisms, between personal and collective mourning, between a myriad of ways of understanding the feminine, and between the melancholic gaze of disenchantment and the furious, tender, and imperious demand that the Revolution, finally, fulfil its promise.
(Revolution, fulfil your promise) Red Love (2024) is the sister film to Red Love (2023). The sounds and images from the original footage of Red Love have been completely re-edited, and a wealth of new archive material has been added, which is clearly inscribed with the urgency of militancy while tracing careful historical genealogies.
This film is the result of 8 years of research going from Moscow Engels-Marx-Lenin archives to multiple personal, familiar, historical and activist archives in Mexico and Latin America. It is a collective work made by a team of researchers and artists of different nationalities. It wants to inscribe itself in the urgency of the tradition of militant film while at the same time tracing careful historical genealogies and projecting into the future.

Starting from the notion of resilience, they discuss topics such as love, friendship, feminist takes on intimacy and collective resistance from the margins. Their different perspectives intersect, providing us with insights into broader questions that underpin contemporary art practices and artistic research.

Sevie Tsampalla (°1977, born in Kos, Greece; lives and works in Brussels) is a curator and researcher. Her practice is at the intersections of contemporary art, curating and activism in public space. With a long-standing interest in collaborative processes, she is involved in artist collectives and projects seeking renewed relationships in/with public space from a feminist perspective. Her doctoral research explored how large-scale exhibitions can be reimagined through notions of commoning, i.e. collective practices that reimagine the city, and ecological imagination beyond capitalism.
