De Belgische kunstenaar Maëlle Dufour (°1994, Bergen) onderzoekt vooruitgang, de archeologie van verspilling en herinnering door middel van complexe systemen en monumentale installaties.
Het kunstwerk Sonar, geïnspireerd door watertanks en drinkbakken, vangt regenwater op en transformeert geleidelijk tot een microbieel ecosysteem. Het glas draagt sporen van slijm, een halfvaste, halfvloeibare substantie die zich aanpast aan en binnendringt in haar omgeving. Slijm, intrinsiek aan elk wezen, wordt beschouwd als de oerbron van al het leven. In dit geval bestaat het uit algen. Algen zorgen sinds het ontstaan van de aarde voor een zuurstofrijke atmosfeer, ze reduceren CO2 en worden tegenwoordig gebruikt in voedsel, medicijnen en plasticvervangers. Dit benadrukt hun potentieel om betekenisvolle verandering teweeg te brengen. Dankzij dit slijm voedt en groeit de sculptuur micro-organismen die zich na verloop van tijd verspreiden.
Sonar werd in opdracht gemaakt voor de tentoonstelling To Have or To Hold in 2024, georganiseerd door Horst Expo in Asiat Park. Het was een gezamenlijke opdracht en coproductie van Cc Strombeek en Horst Expo. In april 2025 zal het werk worden verplaatst naar het Prinsenbos, waar het in een nieuwe omgeving te zien zal zijn tot april 2026. De ruimte in het Prinsenbos zal dienen als laboratorium waar Dufour kan experimenteren met watergerelateerde systemen in de publieke ruimte en deze in vraag kan stellen.
Deze extra muros presentatie maakt deel uit van het beeldende kunstprogramma van het nabijgelegen Cultuurcentrum Strombeek.

De Belgische kunstenaar Maëlle Dufour (°1994, Bergen) onderzoekt vooruitgang, de archeologie van verspilling en herinnering door middel van complexe systemen en monumentale installaties. Een laureate van HISK, die sculptuur studeerde aan La Cambre en in Finland en deelgenomen heeft aan verscheidene prestigieuze tentoonstellingen in België en in het buitenland, zoals Aragon III (voorgezeten door Hans Ulrich Obrist, Parijs, FR), BPS22 (BE), Beaufort Triennale (BE) en Universidad de Conception (CL). Ze is ook uitgenodigd door Shake Résidence Nomade (Tunis, TU), Maac (Brussels, BE), Alumi Startwell (Amsterdam, NL). In 2022 creëerde ze een artistieke integratie in Haren (Brussels, BE). Haar werk werd verschillende prijzen toegekend, zoals le Prix d’encouragement de sculpture by L’Institut de France, de Sofam Prize, 2019, de Prize of the Arts Commission of Wallonia, 2018 en de FWB Public Prize for Young Sculpture, 2020. Ze heeft verschillende beurzen ontvangen, bijvoorbeeld Vocatio, 2022, Aide à la création, 2019, Un Futur pour la Culture en Cocof, 2021.

Nieuw kunstwerk in Grimbergse Prinsenbos doet nadenken over klimaat en verspilling: “Kunst geeft extra dimensie aan boswandeling"
L’artiste belge Maëlle Dufour (née en 1994 à Mons) explore le progrès, l’archéologie des déchets et la mémoire au travers de systèmes complexes et d’installations monumentales.
Sonar est une sculpture en verre, dont la forme rappelle celle des réservoirs d’eau et des abreuvoirs. L’œuvre d’art capte les eaux pluviales et se transforme peu à peu en un écosystème microbien. Le verre présente des traces de mucilage, une substance semi-solide et semi-liquide qui s’adapte à son environnement et s’y fond. Inhérent à toute créature, le mucilage est considéré comme la source première de toute vie. Dans le cas présent, il se compose d’algues. Depuis la création de la Terre, les algues enrichissent l’atmosphère en oxygène et elles réduisent le CO2. On les retrouve aujourd’hui dans les aliments, les médicaments et les substituts de plastique ; preuve qu’elles peuvent engendrer un changement significatif. Grâce à ce mucilage, la sculpture nourrit et fait pousser des micro-organismes qui, au fil du temps, se répandent.
Sonar a été commandé pour l'exposition To Have or To Hold en 2024, organisée par Horst Expo à Asiat Park. Il s'agit d'une commande conjointe et d'une coproduction de Cc Strombeek et Horst Expo.
En avril 2025, l'œuvre sera déplacée vers Prinsenbos, où elle sera exposée dans un nouvel environnement jusqu'en avril 2026. L'espace de Prinsenbos servira de laboratoire où Dufour pourra expérimenter avec des systèmes liés à l'eau dans l'espace public et les examiner de manière critique.
Cette présentation extra muros fait partie du programme d'arts visuels du Centre culturel de Strombeek, situé à proximité.

Lauréate du HISK, elle a étudié la sculpture à La Cambre et en Finlande, et a participé à diverses expositions prestigieuses en Belgique et à l’étranger : Artagon III (présidée par Hans Ulrich Obrist, Paris, FR), BPS22 (BE), Triennale Beaufort (BE), Universidad de Conception (CL)… Elle a également été invitée par Shake Résidences nomades (Tunis, TU), Maac (Bruxelles, BE), Alumi Startwell (Amsterdam, NL). En 2022, elle a créé une intégration artistique à Haren (Bruxelles, BE).
Son travail lui a valu plusieurs prix, notamment le Prix d’encouragement (sculpture) de l’Institut de France, le Prix Sofam en 2019, le Prix de la Commission des Arts de Wallonie en 2018 et le Prix de la Jeune Sculpture de la FWB en 2020. Elle a reçu plusieurs bourses dont « Vocatio » en 2022, « Aide à la création » en 2019, « Un Futur pour la Culture » en 2021 et « Cocof » en 2021.

Belgian artist Maëlle Dufour (b. 1994, Mons) explores progress, the archaeology of waste and memory through complex systems and monumental installations.
The artwork Sonar, shaped after water tanks and drinking troughs, collects rainwater and gradually turns it into a microbial ecosystem. On the glass there are traces of a slimy mucus: a part solid, part liquid, substance which adapts to and permeates its environment. Slime (or mucus), an intrinsic part of every being, is often considered to be the primary source of all life. Here it is made up of algae. Since the origin of Earth, algae have contributed to an atmosphere rich in oxygen, have absorbed CO2 and are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as a replacement for plastics. This underscores their vast potential to bring about meaningful change. Thanks to this slime, the sculpture feeds micro-organisms which proliferate and, over time, spread.
Sonar was commissioned for the 2024 exhibition To Have or To Hold, organized by Horst Expo at Asiat Park. It was a joint commission and co-production by CC Strombeek and Horst Expo. In April 2025 the work will be relocated to Prinsenbos where it will be exhibited in a new environment until April 2026. The space in Prinsenbos will serve as a laboratory where Dufour can experiment with water-related systems in public spaces and critically examine them.
This extra muros presentation is part of the visual arts programme of the nearby Strombeek Cultural Centre.
