Transmission based performance art

Gambletron & Johnny Forever maken performances gebaseerd op live radio transmissies en video. Het duo (mis/ge)bruikt een hele resem digitale en analoge communicatietechnologieën en onderzoeken daarmee topics zoals het scheppen van ruimte en toegankelijkheid in de context van queer en diaspora gemeenschappen.

Frans-Brusselse jazzpianist Dorian Dumont (kernlid van de electro-jazzband ECHT!) hertaalt –zonder elektronica!– een van z’n grote muzikale helden: Aphex Twin. Dumont transcribeerde een wijde selectie van Richard James’ muziek voor piano en geeft ze daarbij een volkomen nieuwe dimensie, van rave klassiekers zoals Polynomial-C tot meer minimalistische meesterwerkjes als Nannou en Fingerbibb, die geïnjecteerd worden met improvisatie en een scheut abstracte(re) blues.

Lorie Bevins is multi-noninstrumentalist B. Van den Eynden (Borokov Borokov, CUNTST, Laat Maat) die probeert om popsongs te creëren tijdens slapeloze nachten en eenzame ochtendglorens, opnieuw en opnieuw. Op Wunderkammer komt-ie heel nerveus zijn fantastische album releasen!

John Bence is een componist en producer uit Bristol. Hij komt uit een familie met een rijke klassieke achtergrond en zit stevig verankerd in de experimentele elektronische muziekcultuur; een erg diverse waaier van invloeden, die hij vertaalt naar bedwelmende klankwerelden vol epische verhaallijnen en compromisloze geluiden met diepe emotionele resonantie. Bence bracht reeds platen uit op o.m. Kill Jockey en Nicolas Jaar’s Other People, en stelt op Wunderkammer gloednieuw werk voor: Archangels. Niet te missen.

Dennis Tyfus, geboren als Willy Willy Fomfaey (Wilrijk, 3 december 1979) is een Belgisch pianist die talloze albums heeft gemaakt, inclusief composities van Paul de Senneville en Olivier Toussaint, instrumentale versies van popmuziek, gearrangeerde versies van filmmuziek, volksmuziek en easylisteningarrangementen van de populairste klassieke muziek.
Hij deelde onder meer het podium met Mette Rasmussen, Chris Corsano, Cameron Jamie, Thurston Moore, Joe Mcphee...

Multi-instrumentalist, zangeres, producer en DJ Laila Sakini komt oorspronkelijk uit Melbourne maar woont momenteel in Londen. Haar werk verenigt geluiden verbonden met haar persoonlijke geschiedenis in beide steden, en de daarmee gepaard gaande dislocatie – die van het vaak ‘tussenin’ zijn. Laila heeft verscheidene gevierde albums achter de kiezen die werden bedolven onder applaus van o.m. The Wire & Boomkat en in vele best-of eindejaarslijstjes terecht kwamen: ergens tussen art pop, trip hop, collage, field recording en spoken word en minimale electronica in – en helemaal fantastisch. Zeer zelden in België, maar voor Wunderkammer met een aantal gloednieuwe songs!

Stacks is het Antwerpse elektronische pop-not-pop duo Jan & Sis Matthé. Ze brachten in 2020 Our Body Memory uit bij Entr’acte/Stellage. Het Amsterdamse label Knekelhuis brengt binnenkort hun nieuwe LP Love and Language uit, een verzameling stemmige, romantische parels die perfect in de plooi vallen zonder zich aan de regels te houden.

PRUILLIP is een nieuwe Belgische sludge band met Louis Evrard (Bert Dockx, Grid Ravage) op gitaar en Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty, Naga Ghost) op drums. De band is ontstaan in de zomer van 2021 toen ze door Dennis Tyfus werden uitgenodigd voor een show in het Antwerpse Middelheimmuseum. Repetitief, traag en luid zijn de belangrijkste ingrediënten waarom Pruillip ons doet denken aan de jonge Earth uit de jaren 90. Pruillip werkt momenteel aan enkele opnames die binnenkort uitkomen op het album Rush. Stay tuned.

With Voor het verdwijnt, en daarna the Belgian multi-instrumentalist Abel Ghekiere introduces his unique sound, which stems from merging modern jazz, traditional folk and field recordings. Through classical arrangements and a cinematic approach to composition, Ghekiere tells a story of grief and the search for solace in 8 songs.

Transmission based performance art

Gambletron and Johnny Forever create performance works bringing live radio transmission and video projection. In their ongoing collaboration, the duo (miss)uses a variety of digital and analog communications technologies to address issues of place-making and access in Queer and Diasporic community contexts.
The artists use short-range FM broadcasts to augment public spaces, build soundscapes, and create a dialogue between viewer and performer. They often interweave their analog transmissions with video conferencing platforms and other Internet forums, blurring boundaries between broadcast spaces online and “on the air.” Bringing together past with present forms of human contact mitigated by these imperfect tools, the artists play with lag, glitch, and technical failure to frustrate the linear temporal framework presupposed in two-way communication.

On APHEXions, the Brussels pianist with French roots Dorian Dumont – key member of the electro jazz band ECHT! – is expressing his love for one of his greatest musical heroes: Aphex Twin. Contrary to what one would expect, there are no electronics involved in this album, but he carefully transcribes a wide selection of Richard David James' music to grand piano, giving the songs a whole new dimension. Rave classics like Polynomial-C and Xtal are being stripped to the core while on tracks like Nannou, Kesson Daslef or Fingerbibb he stays truthful to the minimalistic aesthetics from the original tracks.
As an accomplished jazz pianist, he improvises on the various themes and injects it with a tinge of blues here and there. As a result, this homage record captures both the simple beauty and the unruly complexity of Aphex Twin. But above all, it sounds like refreshing new music that immediately puts Dorian Dumont on the map as a solo pianist!

Lorie Bevins is multi-noninstrumentalist B. Van den Eynden (Borokov Borokov, CUNTST, Laat Maar) making attempts at producing pop-songs during sleepless nights. Generating music in a state of weariness, working as a semi-automaton while seeing the sun come up and watching the bedroom gradually undim and resolve,... synchronously summoning the memory of the exact way the sun comes up over the shallow marshes and the wet-looking Exit 8 ramp that lay due south of the kitchen window every morning, again and again.

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer and DJ Laila Sakini hails from Melbourne’s diverse music scene, but currently dwells in London, her on and off home over the past few years. Her work combines sounds reminiscent of her personal history in both cities and the resultant dislocation of being frequently in-between.
Her debut solo album Vivienne on Total Stasis was commended for its emotional breadth and ellucidating ennui using a modest palette of piano, electronics and voice, earning Laila a place on many best album of 2020 lists.
Surrounding this are significant sentimental forays into art-pop and trip hop in the form of various releases: Strada, Into the Traffic and Under the Moonlight, all on Boomkat Editions, as well as soundtracking spoken word poetry (collaborating with Melbourne poet Lucy Van) and a romantic mixtape through Purely Physical Teeny Tapes. Her forthcoming project, LP Princess Diana of Wales has already been praised by The Wire Magazine for its complex, textured and comprehensive interplay of guitar, vocal and found sounds - due to be released in 2021 by A Colourful Storm.
Practising classical piano as a child and shifting into a club DJ in her early 20s, Laila has performed worldwide across all forms of spaces often gracing radio stations from NTS to LYL, Dublab & Rinse FM, she's now taking the step to focus on composition, performance and production, with Boomkat touting her as a producer of “some of the most vital and brittle music of our time.”

PRUILLIP is a new Belgian based sludge band formed by Louis Evrard (Bert Dockx, Grid Ravage) on guitar and Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty, Naga Ghost) on drums. The band is born in the summer of 2021 when they were invited by Dennis Tyfus for a show at the beautiful Middelheimmuseum (Antwerp). Repetitive, slow and loud are the main ingredients why Pruillip makes us think of the young Earth from the 90's. Pruillip is currently working on some recordings to be released in 2022. Stay tuned.
